This may not look like much at first glance, but this was a great gift of from the sea last week!
During the big wind storms a lot of seaweed washed up on the roads where Alan likes to jog around Ocean Point. He grabbed a couple of garbage cans full, thankfully without giving himself a hernia, and we have spread it out on some of the garden beds that were recently harvested, and also in the compost pile to break down over the winter.
We only use organic methods in our backyard farm because we know that when you put good in, you get good out!
Here we put a cover crop of this fast growing Buckwheat in this bed to bring up some nutrients into this new space. We love using cover crops for weed control, and nutrient fixing. If we're lucky we might get some late season blooms out of them, for the bees to enjoy!
Being stewards of our land and little bit of paradise here in Mid-coast Maine is something we take to heart.
Here's some more pictures of what September is feeling like at our place.
You can see the Kale still going in full force there, in the background, but other things are starting to look spent.
Rudbeckia giving a last show off!
Spaghetti & Acorn squash and some green pumpkins - a quick frost got our vines so it was time to harvest!
